What is the purpose of a well screen?

The primary purpose of a well screen is to prevent sand and larger particles from entering the well while allowing groundwater to flow into it. A well screen consists of a series of perforations or openings that are specifically designed to be small enough to keep sand and silt out, ensuring that the water drawn from the aquifer remains clean and unobstructed. This is critical for maintaining both the quality of the water and the efficiency of the well, as the presence of sand and fine particles can lead to clogging, reduced water flow, and potential damage to the pump system.

While filtering out larger debris might seem similar, well screens are engineered primarily for sand control rather than larger debris, which is more effectively managed through other methods. Regulating water pressure is not a function of the well screen; this is managed through pump systems and other equipment. Supporting the casing is also not the primary role of the screen, as the casing's stability comes from its installation and the surrounding geological conditions rather than the screen itself.
